Dobson versus the GOP
Oct 10th, 2007 by Randy Toman
“Upstart” has decided to get their feet wet and jump in with these words. A person I can call a friend and they are not only an “Upstart” but also upset. Let us welcome Upstart and see what comes of this.
I give you “Upstart”;
By now everyone knows what James Dobson a renowned member of the Christian community, founder of Focus on the Family, has said about the leading Republican candidates for President. If the GOP does not produce a candidate that is pro-life and pro-traditional family he will back a third party candidate, guaranteeing a win for Hillary Clinton, or who ever wins the Democrat nomination. While I personally see that as counter productive as a Christian and a Republican, I can see why he made the challenge. With enough time to the primary he is hoping the social conservatives get out to vote so we can get it right as a party. That is not religious fringe; it is common sense on all the issues.
That said; let’s look at the candidates. McCain, Giulliani, Romney and Thompson are out of the question for Dobson. McCain and Thompson are out of the question for me, but I’d vote for them over the D candidate for sure. The other two would be fine with me, especially Giulliani because he is strong on the fiscal issues and national security issues that are so important to the well being of the nation. Of course there are other candidates in the mix nobody is talking about, and that’s a shame. Brownback, Tancredo and Hunter. These are all good men, but they have never been Governor of a state (or the mayor of a large city). That should be a precursor for seeking the highest office in the land, and it would also get rid of the Hillary prospect. Since there are no such rules we have Senator’s and Congressmen from both parties running for an office they are probably not qualified to hold. (That includes McCain and Thompson). Ron Paul, congressman, doesn’t get the enemy threatening our very existence.
Finally, Huckabee, a former Governor, a proven conservative and strong on foreign affairs. He understands the enemy we face and isn’t afraid to say so. He also understands the folly of taxing productivity. While he is now considered a second tier candidate, I am hoping that will change in the near future. Give him another look and you won’t be disappointed. Even Dobson will be happy, and his challenge will not have
been in vain.
Now that the “big race” is out of the way, I will start taking some time to talk about the local races in the near future.

I listened to the Repub debate last night and I think they all did good. I do think that Giulliani is a strong leader and smart but too liberal on social issues. Brownback is very religious but I’m not sure of his stance on foreign policy. Thompson did better than I thought he would and McCain is loved by the press, so I’m wary of him. Tancredo is ok but not as smart as Giulliani or Huckabee and may not be strong on foreign policy. Hunter is a good man and I need to give him more time to strengthen his platform along with Huckabee. Of course, I would pick any one of these over a Democrat. Paul is out of the question! I listened to the discussion between Dobson and Hannity yesterday and Dobson stuck to his guns, even though Hannity made a few good points about Hillary winning if Christians hold out for someone more morally suitable than the candidates we now have, especially Giulliani or Romney who lead the pack. I get the feeling that Romney will pull ahead in time. Anyone is better than Hillary. If Hillary gets in, she will pick Obama for VP just to get the black votes. There isn’t an honest bone in her body. How in the world did we get in this mess?
If Bill Clinton would have been removed from office as he should have been, we wouldn’t be in this mess! The rule of law is there for a reason and it HAS to be followed by both parties, not just the Republicans.
