PA Turnpike Commission 3 Billion Debt!
Feb 14th, 2008 by The Outsider
The solutions for solving the PA turnpike and bridge maintenance problem is complicated. The PA state highway commission is obligated to come up with 1.7 billion in funds for the operation, maintenance and repair of their interstate roads and bridges. This obligation is the result of the PA legislator passed bill, ACT44, in July 2007. The 1.7 billion is the financial “gap” left by the Feds not paying for the total costs of the highways in question. The 76 turnpikes have been collecting tolls for as long as I can remember, maybe 50 years or more. These roads should be long since paid for and only maintenance and repair costs should be required. If someone from out of state has an accident and does damage to that road, their insurance company pays for it. Also, a good percentage of usage is by out of state drivers, which helps pay the bill. If these roads are sold to private companies, they will have to pay their stockholders, unlike public ownership. A good article on this issue is a simple click below!
