I believe this situation to be true of most school districts in the Lehigh Valley Pa. and possibly across the country. It certainly is a budget/dollar and cents problem but I believe more so it to be a problem of distorted truths, along with attitude and political correctness of thought, thereby making real life decisions almost an impossibility for some people to make.
We have serious problems in our school district and these types of letters to our local School Board and the School Administration should be sent. Any one who wishes to copy this letter and send it to their school administration/ school board is welcome to do just that, with only one stipulation, you must believe these things true, I do and therefore I wrote them.
Dear Dr. Lewis and School Board Members
Bethlehem Area School District (BASD)
Let me state with a certainty that I believe there will be a melt down of the economic and social fabric within the United States. The analysis of the current BASD budget problems cannot be evaluated by simply looking at what the numbers represent for the problem goes much deeper.
Even with the conventional wisdom of prioritizing of needs, attempting to live within the means of the district’s revenues and revaluating the management system thereby developing saving through cost cutting; yet even if these commonsense thoughts were to be introduced, it would still not address the main problems within the system.
The main problem of the District and the Board is one of attitude and suppositional beliefs. We have a School District and Board that is driven by emotionalism supported by an attitude of tax and spend along with a void in discernment of whom the people of both the administration and the board are responsible too.
Let me attempt to explain my words of “discernment of” and “responsibility to”. We have here in the USA a Republic that is established through laws formulated in Western Civilization over centuries. It was common knowledge and completely accepted that our rights where given to us by God and the Constitution represented the law of the land. The Constitution was the guarantor, not the grantor, of our liberties. So neither the School District nor the government gives us nothing, the “discernment of” that concept is lost and/or gone from the board and school administration. The “responsibility too” God, taxpayer, (family) student and finally themselves is gone and has become greed, power and control.
We cannot see how anything that has been conveyed in the newspaper over the last years shows us any order of responsibility and/or discernment of the basic problems within the administration and board. Emotionalism and political correctness rules rather than law and order, upholding standards and principles are not there and academic standards have fallen to depths not seen before. Recklessness of spending rather than prudent concern of debt and future generations are completely abandon.
The budget process is made a mockery, while the taxpayers watch in disbelief. The debt is arguably well past the point were the citizen can support it. If it was not for the bail-out funny money which I have no doubt will dry up in the coming year there would not be a balanced budget. Along with the refinancing of the Bonds, which places the people deeper in debt, we begin to see a bleak financial picture for the citizens of Bethlehem. And after reviewing the situation we find a dismal circumstance facing us, and it is no wonder we have the superintendent deciding to abandon the ship, along with a school board that refuses to face reality.
If the school board cannot and/or will not get hold of the truth of the problems we face, the citizens of Bethlehem will face serious ramifications, as these problems get progressively worse. I would urge you to consider these words carefully.
Sincerely a citizen of Bethlehem, Pa.
